Building Bridges for Collaboration: COPACSO Engages Local Leaders in Karamoja

COPACSO is advancing sustainable land use practices in Karamoja through active collaboration with local leaders and stakeholders. This initiative aims to protect communal lands and build resilience for pastoralist communities.

To that end, COPACSO held a series of key engagements with local leaders and stakeholders across the Karamoja sub-region, including Moroto, Kaabong, and Kotido Districts, Uganda, in February 2024. The primary aim was to foster collaboration, gather essential input, and pave the way for impactful programs aimed at enhancing the lives of pastoralist communities.

COPACSO officials engaged with local government leaders (LC 5s, CAOs, RDCs, and DISOs), representatives from key organizations such as the Regional Universities Consortium for Development (RUCODET) and the Community Land Trust (CLT), as well as leaders from COPACSO member organizations.

Key discussions included:
● Collaborative approaches to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) in land acquisition processes
● Ensuring the protection of communal land
● Tailoring future exchange learning activities to meet community needs

These engagements established robust communication channels, fostering commitment and laying the groundwork for collaborative efforts in the region. The meetings were instrumental in informing the upcoming capacity-building session on participatory rangeland management, a crucial step toward promoting sustainable land use practices.
