Job Summary:
The Coalition of Pastoralist Civil Society Organisations (COPACSO) seeks a highly motivated and experienced Advocacy Officer to lead our efforts in promoting indigenous rights and land justice. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing advocacy strategies, building partnerships, and mobilizing support for indigenous communities’ rights to land and resources. The applicant should preferably be a Karamojong.
About COPACSO
The Coalition of Pastoralist Civil Society Organisations (COPACSO) was established in 2005 as a coalition of civil society organisations with an interest in pastoralism issues working across the cattle corridor in Uganda. It was formed to provide a platform for these organisations to engage in policy formulation and advocacy for the recognition of pastoralism as a way of life and the right of pastoralists to benefit from local and national resources. Its goal is to achieve national policy and local practices that enhance capabilities and improve the welfare of pastoralists. Its mission is to enable members to share experiences and capabilities in order to strengthen pastoral advocacy. COPACSO is currently implementing a project that aims at coordinating the activities of indigenous communities in Uganda.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement advocacy strategies to promote indigenous rights and land justice
- Build and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders, including indigenous communities, civil society organizations, and government agencies
- Conduct research and analysis on policy and legal frameworks related to indigenous rights and land justice
- Develop advocacy materials, including reports, briefs, and press releases
- Mobilize public support and awareness on indigenous rights and land justice issues
- Represent COPACSO in relevant forums and meetings
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (law, human rights, social sciences)
- At least 3 years of experience in advocacy and human rights work
- Strong understanding of indigenous rights and land justice issues
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Fluent in English (written and spoken)
- Fluent in nga’ Karimojong
